PRP Hair

What it is:

Research has found that by injecting platelet rich plasma (PRP) that is procured from your own blood into the scalp, a significant increase in mean hair count can be observed. In order for PRP hair restoration to work, hair follicles, though dormant, must be present, such as in the case of adrogenic alopecia ("male-pattern baldness" which affects both men and women), stress, or post-pregnancy. Growth factors that are released from the PRP act on the stem cells in the hair follicles which stimulates neovascularization (new blood vessels) and thus the development of new hair follicles. For best results, it is recommended to complete a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart, after which time you will continue to see results for 6-12 months then may need a treatment annually to keep up with results.

Before your appointment:

Come to appointment with clean, dry hair/scalp, this means no hair products.

At your appointment:

Your provider will gently draw one to two small tubes of blood depending on the size of treatment area. The blood gets spun in a centrifuge and your provider will use the top "liquid gold" layer as a slip for your treatment. Your provider then thoroughly cleans your scalp/treatment area and gets to work. If you have no hair in the treatment area, your provider will be able to use topical lidocaine to help numb the treatment area. Additionally, a small amount of injected lidocaine is used in conjunction with the PRP to help numb the scalp. Depending on your pain tolerance you may feel a slight pinch and pressure with the insertion of the small needle, and some discomfort as the PRP is injected. The needles used are quite small. After your treatment your provider will give you a scalp massage and send you on your way with aftercare instructions.

After your appointment:

Please do not wash hair/scalp or use any hair products for 24 hours post-treatment in order to avoid risk of infection or irritation.

Additional Info About PRP:

For PRP, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient during their appointment at Apogee, it is then spun in a special centrifuge to separate its components (Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma, Platelet Poor Plasma and Buffy Coat), the PRP (gold layer on top) is then collected from the tube and used for treatment. When PRP is injected it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade. As the platelets organize in the treatment area they release a number of enzymes to promote healing and tissue responses including attracting stem cells and growth factors to repair the damaged area, or in the case of hair restoration, research has shown that injecting the platelets found in a patient's blood and activating growth factors can improve the blood supply to their hair follicles and increase the thickness of their hair shafts and stimulate dormant hair follicles to grow hair again. This treatment can also be done to help increase fullness of beards. Please note: in order for regrowth to occur, hair follicles must be present, if balding is due to conditions such as lupus which may cause follicle scarring it may be ineffective. However, great results have been seen with use of PRP for androgenic alopecia (male-pattern balding).

The safety of PRP has been established for over 20 years for its wound healing properties and it's proven effectiveness has extended across multiple medical specialties including cardiovascular surgery, orthopedics, sports medicine, podiatry, ENT, neurosurgery, dental and maxillofacial surgery (dental implants and sinus elevations), urology, dermatology (chronic wound healing), ophthalmology, and cosmetic surgery. PRP's emergence into aesthetics and skin rejuvenation began in 2004 in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America in countries such as The United Kingdom, Japan, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and Argentina to name a few.

Microneedling with PRP or Benev Exosomes may also be used on the scalp to stimulate hair regrowth. Benev Exosomes are the latest and most advanced stem cell-derived lypholized exosome serum. Exosomes are key players in cell-to-cell communication, delivering a cargo of growth factors, lipids, proteins, minerals, and vitamins which has been clinically proven to rejuvenate and regenerate the skin and hair.
